6 Major Decorating Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

A huge reason why many people don't have the confidence to start a new project is because they are afraid to make a mistake. To give the courage to start on your next dream design i have put together a list of design mistakes you need to avoid to make your project a success. I have also included photos of rooms that do it right.

1. Choosing Paint First

While paint is the most important part of your design, it doesn't necessary mean that it should be the first thing you pick. For example the decor in this room could work with a number of paint colors.

Solution: Find fabrics you truly love and will help set the mood you are looking for and then choose the paint color that coordinates with the pieces you chose.

2. Buying Furniture Without Measuring

It is hard to judge the size of the furniture when it is sitting in a vast showroom floor. that is why many homeowners are shocked to find out that their newly bought furniture doesn't fit their space.

Solution: Measure the area available for each major piece and let these numbers guide you when shopping for furniture pieces. If you fall in love with something outside your size range, ask if it comes in different sizes, or bring the measurements home to tape off in your space, and make sure it's a size you are happy with.

3. Shopping in Just one Store

Shopping in one store might sound like a good idea, because of our busy life schedule, but actually this might be a decision you will regret later. Choosing all your room pieces from one store might result in a much less interesting visual story, thanking some time to shop around.

Solution: Try little boutiques that carry different design lines, or look for online stores that offer different manufacturer pieces and brands.

4. Never Making a Bold Choice

While nobody wants to spend the whole weekend painting over the last weekends mistake, not making a bold choice might make your place feel bland or unsatisfying.

Solution: Take a risk every now and then. Live with it for awhile. If a wall color is too dark, layer it with white or lighter pieces of art or furniture.

5. Buying the Whole Set

Although some might disagree, this is another designer no-no. While this might be a shortcut to achieving a coordinated style without much thought, the results might not be as appealing, as adding a little mix.

Solution: Pick your major piece and look for a different manufacturer for an item that coordinates, without perfectly matching.

6. Never Letting go Of the Past

It can be hard to get rid of clutter, or to shake off a bad design memory. However, the fact that you lived through an awful trend shouldn't put you off a beautiful design idea. For example, if you are turned off by gold fixtures, you might want to keep an open mind to matte brass fixtures that are trendy right now.

Solution: With today's technology, the options are only getting better, and you've got many resources available to help you avoid making a mistake in the future.

So, go ahead and give the next design trend another try. you might find a bold style that you will love forever: After all, you only live once!
